NCPHS Postal Historian Summer 2004

Rich in History
Doctor Delon Henry Abott and his wife are credited for naming the town of Vandemere. Vandemere is a Dutch word meaning "from the sea." Dr. Abott was a Union surgeon who moved to Pamlico County post Civil War from Maine. Dr. Abott owned about 3000 acres in the county and operated steam powered grist mills and saw mills over his acreage. He established his home in Vandemere where he and his wife served as postmaster. Vandemere was incorporated in 1895 with the intent to serve as the county seat for Pamlico County. Due to its "high land values" at the time, acceptable land could not be acquired for a courthouse and the county seat eventually rested in Bayboro.
